According to his sister who comes to him at the school, Scrooge's father is quite abusive. We can only imagine what relief it is for Scrooge to have the relative peace and tranquility of the school as refuge. Perhaps his father realizes what a terrible home he has made for young Scrooge and is attempting to give him a better environment.
Young Scrooge is left alone at school during the holidays because his father neglects to come pick him up and take him home. This neglect highlights the lack of care and attention that young Scrooge experiences from his family, which contributes to his later transformation into a miserly and isolated old man.
The boyy was actully Ebenezer Scrooge himself. His father left him in boarding school most of his young life and we see Scrooge still there as a lonely child at Christmas. This is shown by the Ghost for Scrooge to see why he has a dark dislke of the time of year
