If you step on the brake and it will still not come out of park. Your brake interlock is probably bad. It is under the console and you can get it at advance auto for around 20 bucks.
I'm having the same problems. my 94' Firebird is a 3.4l v6 and varies on the range of RPM's when you put it in park or neutral. i took it to a local repair shop and they said it could be a broken computer chip. or simple as restoring the defaults on the computer chip
my Pontiac keeps getting stuck in park
Should be about 8 or 900 RPM.
To install a shifter slider on a 1969 Pontiac Firebird, first, ensure the vehicle is in park and disconnect the battery for safety. Remove the center console and the existing shifter assembly to access the shifter mechanism. Install the new shifter slider by aligning it with the existing mounting points and securing it in place, ensuring all connections are tight. Finally, reassemble the console and reconnect the battery, testing the shifter's functionality before driving.

I had the problem on a 1994 with V6, sounds similiar. I think the problem stems from the safety locking mechanism that requires the brake pedal be depressed prior to shifting.
