I had the problem on a 1994 with V6, sounds similiar. I think the problem stems from the safety locking mechanism that requires the brake pedal be depressed prior to shifting.
The shifter cable needs adjusted.
I have a 94 Firebird and on the bottom of the shifter knob there is a "U" shaped clip. You will have to shift into L1 to see it since it is on the front of the knob. Once you pull out the clip, it slides off and you can replace it with whatever kind you wnat but make sure the "push to shift" function is on the new knob.
probably down on the transmission where the cable attaches

DAT stands forDash Automatic Transmission (Shifter is on the dashboard/instrument panel)
It sounds like the transmission shifter linkage is disconnected.
Why is the shifter on Manuel transmission so wobbelie
how do you remove the automatic transmission from the 2004 wrx.... i have everything disconnected except for the gearing fork shifter.
look on the base of the knob in the front of it and you will see a push in pin, pull the pin out and the knob will come off.
For an automatic transmission, check the side of the transmission by or at where the shifter linkage goes into the trans. For a manual transmission, check under the shifter boot.
