Overdrive is the normally allowed position , but if you don't want the transmission to shift into overdrive push the button on the end of your gearshift lever ( P R N etc. ) Your O/D OFF light will light up in the dash .
I had the same problem with my 1995 explorer xls. And everyone told me I needed a new transmission. I got on the Internet and found a solution. When Your overdrive light flashes. You need to see if your tranny has a place on the outside to adjust the bands on the inside. This helped mine no more problems. Hope this helps.
how do you replace the fog light bulb on a 2003 ford explorer.
The transmission may be damaged. My wife and I had an Explorer and it did the exact same thing, and shortly after the transmission went out. Have it checked out at a reputable shop or dealer.
Could be alarm...

I had the same problem with my 2002 ford explorer in 2008. I took my vehicle to the dealership and ended up having to have my torque converter which is inside of the transmission replaced. Yes it was costly!
According to the 2003 Ford Expedition owners manual : If your Overdrive Off light is flashing : " have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible otherwise damage to your transmission can occur " ( it might just be a sensor )
my check engine light stays on and the o/d light blinks....what could this mean?
Some have "fake theft" lights. If the light is blinking red near the radio then it is a fake.
It's a button on the end of the gear selector lever ( P R N etc . )
