if the vehicle has a low brake pedal, check for brake fluid leaks, or out of adjustment brakes. if it is just low on fluid, check for worn out brake linings.
The first thing to check is low brake fluid. A leak in the system or worn brakes causing the fluid to be too low is the most common cause for the light to be on.
You may be low on brake fluid or the parking brake linkage needs adjusting.

On my girlfriends 2001 Escape it came on because the brake fluid was low. Open the hood and look at the fluid reservoir. If it is not filled to the full line, fill it with the proper brake fluid and see if the light goes out.
Assuming you mean the red " BRAKE " light in your dash is lit : That means that either your BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IS LOW in the brake master cylinder or your parking / emergency brake is engaged
Probable causes: Low or no fluid in reservoir; Worn brake pads/shoes; Air in brake lines; Leaking brake line.
