Most dryers last 15 - 20 years. However, there are a few possibilities as to what is causing your dryer to work less efficiently besides age.

1. Run an extra spin on your washer before putting the laundry into the dryer. Older washers will not do as good a job, so the laundry may be heavier with water than normal. If you wash extra-size loads, consider splitting them in two.

2. Check the vents and filters first of all. If they are blocked at any point the air flow will be restricted and will delay or prevent drying. lf so, every 3-4 years, unplug the dryer and remove the back of it (it's just a metal panel, don't be afraid) and clean all the lint out of there. If doing that doesn't make it work again, your moisture sensor may be slowly dying. If that is the case, you just have to run some loads twice.

3. The next thing would be to find out for sure if the heating element is actually working, whether it is gas or electric. You can order parts online, but a service call to a professional may save you money. We replaced several parts, but then the heat element was not available and money was wasted.

4.If the exhaust hose has been on your dryer for more than a year you should first of all REPLACE your exhaust hose. Don't just clean it out but REPLACE it. Doing that not only prevents fires (from any trapped fluff catching on fire) but also helps to keep your dryer running at optimal performance.

5. Using a pair of "dryer balls", available from supermarkets and speciality homeware shops, help to make the clothes dry faster so you're recommended to use those too. Eventually, you may wish to consider replacing the dryer.

By the way, if you have an "off-brand" or "lower cost" dryer, then it's sometimes cheaper to buy a new dryer!

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician or gas fitter to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.
