DE, also called Diatomaceous Earth, are the bones of tiny anamils and algae that lived millions of year ago. It's used to coat the grids of DE filters. The dirt is trapped in the DE on the grids and is back-washed out, similar to a sand filter. Then fresh DE is put in the skimmer and re-coats the grids. About once per month you should take your DE filter apart and clean the grids, then re-coat them with fresh DE. DE filters are a bit more expensive but if you have to have the best water, DE is the way to go.

The filter needs to be dismantled to find the damaged elements and replace them. While the filter is down have all the grids inspected and cleaned to determine if more are damaged. Depending upon filter brand there are 8 grids.

The formula is usually on all DE bags . . . you have to know the square footage of the filter. This is usually stated on the name plate of the filter. Such as 36 sq.ft; 48 sq.ft.; With Hayward it is usually 4800;3600 etc. An easy to remember formula would be take the sq. ft, divide by 5, this answer will tell you how many cans or scoops of DE are dumped into the skimmer. Example: 48 div. by 5 = 10 rounded off. Note: if your filter is more than 1 yr old ~ your filter will have a residual of old DE left in the tank after each Back Wash ~ it never totally removes all the old DE and dirt during a B/W ~ this accumulates so that is why you clean out the filter tank. This formula will give you an even and uniform coating on all grids ~ the DE is what is doing the filtering not the cloth grids. k
How does a DE filter work on a pool?
Simply put, Diatomaceous Earth (DE) are the bones of tiny little animals that lived millions and millions of years ago, diatoms. This DE is used to coat the "grids" inside the DE filter which captures and filters particles as small as 5 microns. When the filter pressure rises, the swimming pool DE filter is backwashed in the same manner as a sand filter. A slurry of DE is put into the skimmer to "recharge" or "re-coat" the grids of these swimming pool DE filters. This type of filter is effective and efficient but a little more expensive to maintain. Some call it the "water polisher" of pool filters.
How does one prevent DE from returning to a pool when the pool already has new DE filters?
First put the filter together correctly on the inside, next patience some of the DE is small enough to go through the mesh. The next time around after vacuuming it will remain in the filter, That is how DE works so well It depends on how the D E is getting back to the pool.. If the D E is puddling around the Main Drain Grate you have a leak in the filter - usually caused be a bad or old tank gasket or old , broken, missing orings, seals in the back wash valve. Recheck the assemble of the grids and make sure they are al seated correctly. If so then pull the whold assembly out and check the manifold for cracks or areas that may be broken. In addition to the above, the filter grids could be the wrong ones for that brand of filter. There are about 4 different kinds of manufacturer's configurations depending upon who made the filter. There are also some after market filter grids that are not made to the manufacturer's specs and do not fit well.

Why pressure builds up in your hayward de filter after an hour of cleaing and recharging it?
One of two things or both is likely. First, when was the last time the filter grids or fingers were chemically cleaned? If the filter was ever run without DE powder, or too little, the grids will get clogged with detritus and require more extensive cleaning rather than just backwashing. Secondly, over time body oil, suntan lotion and personal care products will attach to the grids and you cannot rinse them away. If you use a Biguanide system like Baquacil, Revacil or Soft Swim, you will also need to chemically clean the filter more frequently.
