Bad Heater Core or Leaking Hose *** Caution *** Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink ant that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old. Heater Core 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable 2. Drain and recycle the engine coolant. 3. Remove the instrumental panel. 4. If equipped with the 5.4L 4V engine, remove the junction block splash shield. 5. If equipped with the 5.4L 4V engine, remove the bolts and disconnect the cable ends from the starter relay. 6. If equipped with the 5.4L 4V engine, remove the junction block bracket. 7. Disconnect the heater core hose couplings. 8. Remove the retaining screw and remove the A/C plenum demister adapter. 9. Disconnect the vacuum line from the A/C plenum demister adapter. 10. Remove the heater core bracket. 11. Remove the 13 plenum chamber top retaining screws. 12. Remove the plenum chamber top. 13. Remove the blend door assembly from the case. 14. Remove the heater core. 15. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

Your heater core is leaking ( inside heater housing under passenger side dash ) it must be replaced. You can stop the leak temporarily by looping the two hoses together that enter the firewall from the engine until a repair can be made.

If you are sure it is water and not coolant, then the A/C Condenser drain line is stopped up. You will find it near the firewall on the passenger side. Look for a tube under the Jeep. If it is coolant, which will taste sweet, your heater core is leaking and must be replaced.

Heater core will usually leak. Check the floor under the dash & near the firewall. You will smell anti-freeze/ coolant inside your truck/car. Inside windshield will fog up & there will be an oily film on the glass. On some cars there is a drain tube that goes out thru the firewall to keep the coolant from leaking inside ( 95 Gran AM GT for one) Look for that tube near the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment but make sure the coolant is coming from the drain hose & not the heater hoses

If you are getting coolant inside the car your Heater core is leaking but if only smelling coolent. The hose on the exterior maybe the issue and it maybe that the sound blanket in that area where the ends of the heater core pass thru the firewall is asborbing coolent hence the smell.
