I would guess your male cat learned mating behavior before he was neutered. Once a male cat learns gender-typical behavior (marking, mating, etc), he will continue to engage in that behavior even if he is later neutered.
Aggressive or mating behavoir is usually a sign of Adrenal Disease.
See related question below for explanation: What is Ferret adrenal disease?
no although the male may still try and jump on the females back and bite her neck as if mating
It's a natural urge. Human men and women who have had a vasectomy or hysterectomy still have sex after all. Getting the cats fixed just eliminates the possibility of conception.
He/She has just had her bits altered, might be a bit sore, may have changed their mood swings, a little mystified as to what has just occur-ed to them.
It is very unlikely that a neutered cat will try and mate with a spayed female. The female will likely tell the male she is not interested if he indeed tries.

A neutered male can get your cat pregnant up to 30 days after he's been neutered. So if the cat just was neutered, keep him away from your female.
An intact (not neutered) male cat is a Tom and an intact female cat is a Queen.
Male cats are neutered and female cats are spayed.
Probably, if you have a female and a male and nether are spayed or neutered.
Female cats get spayed. Male cats get neutered. It's the smart thing to do.
An unaltered female is called a "queen".A young cat is a "kitten".A non-neutered male cat is a "tom" or "tomcat" and is a "gib" (when neutered).Common term for a female cat is "Molly".
No, he can't. Neutering involves removing a male cat's testicles, which are the organs that produce sperm. Without them, it is impossible for a male cat to produce sperm, and therefore impossible for him to impregnate a female cat.
Yes cats have an alpha structure. Depending on weather the cat is female or male and if the female cat is sprayed and the male is neutered. Making the female have a larger territory when it coming from the kittens.
The cat will suffer a loss of testosterone, which will make it act more like a female cat.
An entire (not neutered) male cat is called a Tom cat.
