Throw in some tissue/toilet paper, newspaper or paper towel, along with some old strips of fabric, for the rat to fiddle with & make a nest out of.
Also, for boredom, tie a piece of fruit or vegetable to the roof or sides of the cage for them to gnaw at & try to get down. Hollow bones & kongs filled with jam or beanut butter, or some other food they like, will also keep them entertained.
