Had Rover 218TD with same engine, alternator went and rev counter stopped working. There were 3 wires to alternator, big thick red one, alternator light one and the rev counter feed. if the whole dash instrument has stoped workin i.e the speedo , rev counter and fule gage then disconnet the battery leave for a min or so and reconect....u should be sorted :) if not check the fuses
