Why isn't my iRiver e150 connecting properly to my PC to transfer files?

Got this off a forum and it seems like a common problem:
"I had just the same problem then realized I had not fully pushed the USB connector into the iRiver. It seemed to allow charging and playing but not data transfer in that partly inserted mode. The little rubber plug that protects the USB connection socket when not in use does not readily clear the socket and when you insert the cable, it only seems to go in so far. I thought that was as far as it went and it did seem to have a definite snap when it was inserted that far, but it was just not fully inserted."
