The figure of "Lady Justice" comes from Roman mythology. In ancient Roman religion, it was a goddess, rather than a god, who represented justice. The Romans believed that women exemplified morality (moral values): women maintained the home and taught the children, so it was believed they were more suited to being fair and yet compassionate, as Justice ought to be. It was also believed that because men were more war-like, they would turn justice into rule by force.

Why is Sandra Day O'connor so important?

Sandra Day O'Connor was important because she was the first woman ever appointed to the Supreme Court; President Reagan named her to that position in 1981. She was already well-respected as a lawyer, an Assistant Attorney General in her native Arizona, a state senator, and then a judge. Justice O'Connor saw herself as a centrist: she was a conservative Republican, but she was known for being fair and moderate in her decisions. She served until 2006.
