People may become emotionally unstable for many reasons and they can be caused by events, such as the death of a family member or a breakup with their significant other, to conditions caused by chemical imbalances or injuries in the brain. Emotional instability, such as the death of a family member, can lead to illness such as depression. People who have mental illnesses may also be seen as emotionally unstable, sometimes as part of their condition, or sometimes as a reaction to their condition.

This all relates to physical education in a big way. Ailing mental health can have a huge impact on our physical health. Sadness, melancholy or depression may all manifest as having a lack of energy and being constantly tired and/or having insomnia, as well as weight loss. Many people who are suffering from depression first present to their doctor complaining of physical symptoms. Eating disorders are a type of mental illness. The emotional instability is needing to control (such as anorexia nervosa) or feeling a lack of ability to gain any control (as in binge eating disorders) and these disorders can have very dire physical consequences. Many anorexia nervosa patients require treatment from both the mental health and medical sectors. Substance dependencies can lead to deterioration of physical health and even lead to death. But to put it in more day-to-day, can happen to anyone terms, when we don't feel happy or content, we don't perform as well physically. When we stress and lose sleep, we leave ourselves open to illnesses.

The opposite is also true. Our physical health can impair our mental health. People who find themselves suddenly in a wheelchair, having a terminal illness or life altering injury can quite often find themselves suffering from severe depression. Athletes who sustain an injury that puts them in a position where they have to give up their sport can find themselves suffering depression and anxiety. Psychologists also quite often look after the mental wellbeing of professional athletes to make sure teams play at their optimum. Stressed athletes do not perform as well.

On a personal note, I have Bipolar disorder. I tried medication and it made me sick so I stopped. I go to a counselling psychologist when things get bad, but one thing that allows me to live fairly normally day to day without medication is exercise. I'd never suggest that mental illness could be treated with exercise alone, but it would sure help. Keeping myself physically healthy helps with my mental health.
