What is tobacco monopoly?

A monopoly is a business who makes unique products and have very little to no competition because of it. Apple is a monopoly because only Apple manufactures the iphone, ipad, and itunes. Although people try to compete, no one can make the exact product but Apple. I don't know of a tobacco monopoly but I guess Newport is the closest thing, followed by Marlboro, of course.

Why it is better when two firms compete?

It is good for two firms to compete, especially for the consumer. The best way to show this is by a basic example. If Company A is the only company that makes TVs, then they can charge whatever they want to because they are the only company that makes it. If Company B begins to make TVs, then Company A now has competition. Now, Company B could price their TV lower than Company A, and in return, Company A has to price theirs lower to keep up with the competition. Now, in today's world, throw in multiple competitors and that is what the economy is made of. It is great for the consumers, but bad for the firms because they won't make as much money as they would if they had a monopoly. The Sherman Antitrust Act was put in place to protect consumers from monopolies taking advantage of them.

What is a puremonopoly?

When one company has the control over the entire market for a product, usually because of barriers to entry. With the ability of price control and supply setting, this monopoly is extremely rare in any sort of market unless it is a government granted monopoly because of some inherent factors that make it crucial for a monopoly to exist. Otherwise, it may exist under certain circumstances, such as; a patent created monopoly which gives the company unilateral control over the extire market for a product, a cartel or illegal trust monopoly, or a natural monopoly where the supply for a product comes from one source because of natural barriers to entry that makes it nearly impossible for others to enter the market and survive.

What is true about firm with a natural monopoly?

A natural monopoly occurs when the most efficient number of firms in the industry is one. A natural monopoly will typically have very high fixed costs meaning that it impractical to have more than one firm producing the good. An example of a natural monopoly is tap water. It makes sense to have just one company providing a network of water pipes and sewers because there are very high capital costs involved in setting up a national network of pipes and sewage systems. To have two different companies offering water, wouldn't make sense as the average cost would be very high compared to just one. There would also be the inconvenience of having two firms dig up the road to lay a duplicate set of water pipes. It usually agrees to allow the government to control the price and service provided. Is workers compensation fund in Utah a monopoly?

No. A monopoly is when a company dominates a product or service. This prevents competition by other companies and makes prices higher for consumers. A good example of a monopoly was the telephone company Bell Telephone. Before the company was broken up the only telephone service to consumers was Bell. If a consumer wanted a phone they had to buy or rent the phone from Bell and all long distance/ local calls were only done through Bell Telephone. A workers compensation fund is a government agency and controlled by the state. It is a fund that employers and employees pay into so if a worker is hurt they can file a claim.
