This is not a Do-It-Yourself job. Because refrigerant is very dangerous to handle - you could suffocate yourself or someone else in the room - you need to have the right tools and test equipment and must have been trained so that you know what you are doing. Any air conditioning unit that has developed a fault must be thoroughly checked by an expert to ensure that a) it is running safely and b) there are no leaks of refrigerant. The most common problem is low refrigerant. have that checked first.
Many AC controls will act like that when you are out of refrigerant. Have the refrigerant level checked. If you have a very slow leak, it might be easier to just add refrigerant every year. If the leak is very substantial, it might be better to have it repaired.

Compressing the refrigerant into a high pressure vapor (which the compressor does) increases the heat of the refrigerant, as, when under high pressure, the molecules rub together more frequently, thus generating additional heat to the heat already absorbed by the refrigerant. This facilitates the heat transfer necessary for the proper performance of an air conditioning system.
