As stated above, North Korea is a Communist country. There is nothing a capitalist fears more than communism, as it would mean the loss of all their wealth and power. US rulers want to make sure no communist country succeeds, lest those political ideas "infect" the US.
North Korea defies the US. Only the US and its friends are allowed to have satellites and nuclear weapons, but N. Korea tries to make them anyway.
US rulers will say that North Korea is a horrible Dictatorship that treats its people very badly, and tries to develop nuclear weapons and power, despite what everyone else wants them to do. This is all true, but it is a hypocritical stance, since the US has supported many, many horrible dictatorships, and allowed countries like Israel, India, and Pakistan to develop nuclear technologies without making a big fuss.
North Korea is small and powerless. The US can pick on N. Korea because it is relatively powerless. Russia, for instance, has a policy of, "whatever the US wants, we do the opposite." But the US tries not to notice too much, because Russia is big and powerful.
