Chennai receives rainfall in winter because the northeast monsoon winds blow over the Bay of Bengal, pick up moisture, and when they intercept the eastern ghats, cause heavy rainfall on the Coromandel Coast. Chennai does not receive rainfall in June as there are no relief features to obstruct the winds. In the winter season they receive rainfall from the retreating southeasterly winds which blow from sea to land.
in winter northwest parts of India get some rains due to cyclonic deppressions, better known as western disturbances. as a result of these deppressions there are light rains in the plains of the Punjab and haryana.
