Nozaleda, the Archibishop at that time, was against Aglipay because he advocated the cause of the Filipino priest in being able to have their own parishes. During that time, the Filipino priests were merely "alalays" of the Spanish friars because the friars saw their Filipino counterparts as being incompetent.

The Nozaleda-Aglipay agreements refer to the negotiations between the Spanish colonial government and the Aglipayan church in the Philippines in the early 1900s. Nozaleda, the Spanish bishop at the time, opposed the agreements because they challenged the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, to which he was loyal. The agreements were seen as a threat to the dominance of the Catholic Church in the Philippines.

Who is Gregorio Aglipay?

NO! You must be confusing him with another Gregorio(Del Pilar) who was the Tirad Pass "hero". Gregorio Aglipay was a Catholic priest turned revolutionary who eventually established the Philippine Independent Church upon realizing the futility of going back to the Catholic fold. There is already an article in Wikipedia about him. Please refer to that.

Why can an Aglipayan priest have a wife?

The Philippine Independent Church was inspired by Bishop Gregorio Aglipay (1860-1940) who himself was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church, became a Freemason, and married. The church was formed in 1902, partly in response to the history of mistreatment of native Filipinos by Spanish colonial priests. The church does not require clerical celibacy and rejects the primacy of the Church of Rome.

Historical significance of Philippine Independent Church?

Type your answer here... The Philippine Independent Church was started during the Philippine revolt against Spain in the 1890's. The Pilipinos who were studying and training as seminarians in the Philippines supported the revolt against Spain. When they were going to be ordained they chose and joined this newly formed church where they believe in the bible, in Jesus Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, they confess to God directly and their ministers/priest get married. The last two precepts made them protestants right away, similar to the episcopalians and the anglicans. The Pilipino seminarians who joined this new church were also Katipuneros. There were two catholic seminaries in the Philippines at that time , in Manila and in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Katipuneros were the Pilipinos who fought the Spaniards. My grandfather was one of them, a Katipunero and an Aglipayan priest. They were called Aglipayan because the head of this group was Fr. Gregorio Aglipay, a former catholic priest. The Philippines through Dr. Jose Rizal asked the United States to help in the fight against Spain. The United States declared war against Spain. The rest is history.....the Spanish-American War. rcm.
