Why on my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7liter Quad Cab air only blows through vent position not floor or defrost fan works on all speeds and recirc?

My wife has an 03 regular cab short box with this problem. We had it at the dealership 2000 miles off warranty & was told its a common problem. The flapper inside which directs the air different directions is broken & if I recall correctly they wanted appx $750 to fix it. On the bright side if you can do it yourself the part is about $20. But the rest was all labor. We left it alone. Russ

the button on the far right on the ac control panel is for recirc. when pushed to "on" this means the ac is drawing air from the cabin instead of from outdoors. running on recirc reduced the load on the ac because the air in the cabin is already somewhat cool and dehumidified. on humid days, if you are not running on recirc, the ac is pulling in 100% outdoor air and it cannot dehumidify the outdoor air completely and the excess humidity comes out of the vents as water vapor. when it's humid outdoors, start on outdoor air if outdoors is cooler than the cabin, then run in recirc after the cabin cools.

A little. The colder it is the less of the volatile components will evaporate from the liquid. Some pumps have a gas recirc system and then it doesn't matter.

There are three ways to go about this problem. The first is remove the dashboard and the HVAC box. This options would be used when you will be changing other items, like the heater core, evaporater, etc. The second way it to remove the dashboard only. Then remove just the recirculation door housing, leaving the HVAC box in place. This option could be used to replace the recirc door only and use the existing recirculation door housing. Or to replace both the recirc door and housing with new parts. The third option is to do a NO Dash Removal - thru the glove box fix. This would be used if you can not or do not want to remove the dashboard. This repair does Not put the recirc door back to normal working condition. It is a means to either stop the draft from coming thru the recirc door housing on the passenger side, or to relief the blocked airflow problem. Likely, as in most VW's, the recirculation air door is stuck in the 'closed' position. This can be alleviated by (a) replacing the recirculation damper vacuum motor, (b) locking the recirculation door in the 'open' position (illegal, but effective), or (c) doing nothing. Any repuable auto A/C shop should be able to locate and correct this problem. the Recirc door is located on the passenger side of the lower dash, behind (sort-of) the glove box. Good luck.

a great down-and-dirty way is to get a can of lysol, turn on fan and "recirculate", which might be "max a/c" in your vehicle, find the recirc intake vent (the vent in the floor area that is drawing air in 'recirc' mode, or not blowing air when vent is on "high", usually on passenger side), turn fan about medium, and spray lysol in intake vent until lysol mist exits the vents. Then shut down HVAC and let the lysol disinfect.

Under the passengers kick panel under the glove box. Remove the two screws holding the panle and underneath is a black panel with four screws. The filter will be one of two types. Cars with interior air quality sensor are thicker than those without. To tell which you should have look at the Recirc switch on the Climate Control Panel. The switch will have two lights in it for IAQS and one light without. The IAQS recirc switch will have Man and Aut on it also.
