I think it comes from people's sinful nature from the start. They think only of themselves and fail to put others before themselves. It sucks a lot. It just leads to those people hurting others.

People are selfish mainly from fear. They are afraid that they won't have enough, or that they will miss something important, or that other people won't like them if they don't have a certain thing.
