Most gasoline engines are 8:1 - 10:1 compression, while a diesel engine requires closer to 18:1 - 20:1 to achieve the temperature required to ignite the fuel. Simply put an electronic ignition system is less complicated and more cost effective to mass produce. Especially taking into account the emissions requirements for todays "clean" diesels.
