A pit that reduces the boiler plate thickness (at its weakest point) to 1/4 of the original thickness will fail at its Maximum Allowable Working Pressure. The weakest point is typically at the longitudinal joint (welded or riveted boilers) and pitting, grooving and cracking at this joint is closely monitored in all boilers.
