One reason that your remote key will not unlock your Mazda 6 is that a fuse is blown. You may need to replace the batteries in the remote or reprogram the remote. A bad body control module is another reason the remote will not unlock the doors.
yes. your local Mazda dealer can program them for you. if they say it cant be done; theyre lieing to get you to pay for another key fob. the systems are the same the key fob may "look" different.

This is how to program a Mazda protege keyless (also works with other Mazda models) remote system: 1. Open Drivers door and leave open. 2. Lock and unlock the drivers door using the power lock switch on door panel. (not sure if this is required) 3. Insert key into the ignition. 4. Turn key to the ON and OFF position 3 times in 10 seconds. Leave key in ignition. ( i have seen others say 24 seconds for 4 & 5 combined) 5. Open and close drivers door 3 times ending with door in the open position. (you can depress the door switch instead) 6. Door locks should respond by locking and unlocking. 7. Press any button on remote 2 times. Doors should lock and unlock. 8. If programming a second remote press any button 2 times on it and door locks should cycle again. 9. 1. close & lock all door using driver's side power lock switch 2. place key in & (fully) out of ignition 6 times within 10 seconds (the hazard lights will flash 2x) 3. turn the key to the acc position 4. unlock and relock the doors with the switch on the driver's door 5. press the lock button on the remote (the hazard lights should flash again) [NOTE: This part is less certain but if there are any other remotes (including old), unlock doors (and re-lock?) within 5 seconds, then press lock button on the next remote; repeat for remaining remotes] 6. remove the key, unlock door, open and close door, and try remote

You pay a ridiculous price for Mazda to sort it!! Walmart can sell you the key and on some vehicles they can program it for a reasonable charge. They will tell you if they can program your key.
Step 1: Open drivers door and leave open. Step 2: Insert key into the ignition. Step 3: Turn key to "ON" position and return to "LOCKED" (i.e. off) position. Do this 3 times within 10 seconds. Leave key in the ignition. Step 4: Open and close the drivers door 3 times. (Door should be left open after this step). Step 5: ECU should respond by locking and unlocking the doors. Step 6: Press "UNLOCK" button on remote #1. ECU responds by locking and unlocking the car doors. Step 7: Press "UNLOCK" button on remote #2 (etc.) Each time the ECU will respond by locking & unlocking the doors. Step 8: Remove the key from the ignition and the ECU will respond a final time with a series of door locks and unlocks. You're done!

(door locks will cycle) 5. hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the remote at the same time. (locks will cycle again) 6. Any VW dealer can program it for you. There isn't a way to do it yourself, unfortunately. or try this (much cheaper than VW rip-off) Switch Ignition on with old key - leave key in the ignition. Lock drivers door using new key. Press the unlock button once on new key. Horn will sound once. Wait 6 seconds - press the unlock button once more to activate coding procedure. The remote control should now be programmed.
