Why should I pay tens of thousands of dollars each year to attend Law School if I can sit at home and study the constitution and other ancient documents for free?

You can't get a Law Degree that way. In most jurisdictions, you can't get a license to practice law.
But if your only interest in the subject of Law is informal and casual, sure go ahead. I study many subjects only as a "hobby" informally for free with no expectation of getting a degree.
