None of the countries in Eastern Europe had any previous experience of genuine democracy, and in many there was a deep-seated yearning for a 'strong leader'. By the mid 1930s all the countries of Eastern and Central Europe except Czechoslovakia were dictatorships usually with sham parliaments.
