Does Hyperventilating make you hold your breath longer?

Yes you can because hyperventilating causes you to blow off too much CO2, causing your arterial PCO2 to decrease (called hypocapnia). High levels of CO2 in the blood is the main control of the respiratory cycle, and is the drive for us to breathe. Chemoreceptors respond to changes in CO2, and when the level is low such as after hyperventilation, these receptors trigger a reflex decrease in respiration by stimulating the respiratory center in your brain to slow down. Decreasing the number of times you breathe allows the amount of CO2 in your body to increase again from tissue metabolism (CO2 is an end product of tissue metabolism). As a result you can hold your breath longer at this time. CORRECT ANSWER: No you can not! When your under water your brain tells you when you need to breathe so if you hypervetilate you loose a lot of the CO2 in your blood. So when you go under water after you have hyperventilated then your brain will think you don't have to breathe when you really do and it will cause you to black out without knowing so in the end it can be a life threatening thing.

Why should you be able to hold your breath longer after hyperventilation?

Because hyperventilation clears out more of the carbon dioxide out of your system, and it's the build-up of CO that controls your breathing reflex. Do note that hyperventilating is a Bad Idea, particularly when diving. Lack of oxygen is what knocks you unconscious, but it's the build up of CO which forces you to breathe.

Why is it dangerous to hyperventilate before swimming under water?

I've never heard of hyperventilation being dangerous after swimming, but it is dangerous before swimming. You know when you hold your breath and you feel a strong urge to breathe? This is called the pressure to breathe and it happens before you are actually in danger of running out of oxygen. Your body monitors the level of carbon dioxide (not the level of oxygen) in your blood to decide when to breathe - when it builds up, you feel the pressure to breathe. By hyperventilating, you can clear more carbon dioxide out of your blood than you do with normal breathing. This mean that you can stay underwater for longer without feeling the pressure to breathe. The dangerous part is that you can run low on oxygen before your carbon dioxide levels get high enough to trigger the pressure to breathe - so you could be swimming along, feeling fine, and suddenly you don't have enough oxygen. A lot of kids died this way doing diving contests in quarry swimming holes - if you don't have time to get to the surface when your body belatedly realizes that you need to breathe, you can drown.
