How are the neurotransmitters effected by ecstasy?

Ecstasy is mostly know for increasing Serotonin levels in the synapse which it does the most. It also increases levels of dopamine, monoamine, and norepinephrine. Serotonin is associated with your mood/emotions, sleep and appetite. Antidepressant drugs ussually target and increase serotonin levels as people who are depressed have low serotonin levels. This is why ecstasy makes you happy and loving when you take it. Dopamine is what allows us to expierence pleasure or pain, This is why it is sometimes called the reward center of our brain. Low dopamine levels lead to addiction. As far as I know monomine and norpinephrine are closely related to serotonin and are also related to your mood and depression.

Do hormones respond to changes in thoughts and feelings?

Although brain chemical imbalances that cause depression are complex, researchers believe that a few main hormones are responsible for promoting feelings of well being. These hormones are norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Another name for these hormones is monoamine transporters; that is they carry important messages along the neural pathway in the brain. Where an imbalance of these hormones occurs, a mood, energy or cognitive problem results. This is why these hormones are closely associated with depression. Norepinephrine Norepinephrine is produced by the adrenal glands and nerve cells to help us maintain energy and activity. Norepinephrine is also called noradrenalin and behaves similar to adrenalin, in that it is released in reaction to anger or emergency. As with serotonin related antidepressants, norepinephrine related medications do not increase levels of norepinephrine, but attempt to help the sympathetic nervous system to process it more efficiently. Dopamine Dopamine is associated with euphoria and our desire or motivation. Dopamine is also connected with the information pathway in the brain. A dopamine disorder or imbalance can cause memory and cognitive loss as well as difficulty with problem solving. Serotonin Serotonin may help us feel energetic, calm and assured. Most mood problems are associated with serotonin imbalances. Because the vast majority of depression sufferers may have low levels of serotonin, and because most medications seek to increase serotonin levels, serotonin is discussed here in more detail. Low levels of serotonin not only affect mood, but the ability to cope with strong emotions. Low serotonin may also inhibit sensitivity to possible consequences, which may explain why aggression, impulsive behavior and suicide are prolific in people with low serotonin levels. we are all subject to these hormones regardless of age.

What type of chemicals in brain that make people be chemically dependent?

Neurotransmitters; principally serotonin and dopamine.

When you are depressed what happens to the levels of serotonin?

You have it backward I believe. When serotonin is lower, people have more risk to experience depression.

How can serotonin be tested?

Serum serotonin levels can be obtained (as ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner or physician assistant). However, serum serotonin levels do not possess much utililty since they vary widely - some people having low levels despite being on significant doses of setonergic medications, and other people have high levels despite being on very low doses.

Which neurotransmitteres play role in psychosis?

As far as we know, dopamine is the main culprit in psychosis. Autospies have shown excess dopaminergic receptors in the brain's of people who suffered psychosis. Other neurotransmitters are also affected.

Without enough dopamine what happens?

Insufficient levels of dopamine can cause problems with sleep, mood and movement. For example, lack of dopamine causes the muscular problems seen in people with Parkinson's disease.

Is it safe to give a 7 year old with ADD coffee?

Coffee has been seen to increase dopamine levels in the body. The release of dopamine clams people down, which is the basis for how ADD medications like Ritalin work. It would be smart, however, to confirm with a doctor over this matter.

What neurotransmitter does methamphetamine cause the brain to release?

Cocaine and crack cocaine are psychostimulants that affect neurons containing dopamine in the areas of the brain known as the limbic and frontal cortex. When cocaine is used, it generates a feeling of confidence and power. However, when large amounts are taken, people "crash" and suffer from physical and emotional exhaustion as well as depression.

How does exercise stimulate serotonin?

There are two effects. The first is an increase in circulation results in an increase of metabolism. Especially the short term reactions. These include serotonin. An increased heart rate adds to this effect. Because serotonin is such a powerful neurotransmitter, its levels take a while to return to normal, thus the "feeling good" afterwards since other metabolic processes are slowing down, yet you still have a high supply of serotonin. Intense periodic exercise (even just 30 minutes a day), causes the brain to become "used" to serotonin, thus producing more serotonin receptors on the neurons to counter the "addiction". Thus, periodically raising your temporal serotonin levels through daily exercise, results an increase in "happiness" (although this evens out eventually), and a mild "depression" (caused by addiction to your own brain chemical) when you miss a few exercise sessions in a row. People who train often can attest to this.

Do people with panic attacks have low serotonin levels?

Perhaps, but many patients with panic disorder are found to have a decrease in the number of receptors that serotonin binds to. The effect is equal to having a low serotonin level. I am a medical student currently doing research in this area.

Can a low carb diet cause anxiety?

Yes they can. Because you are not getting in much if any carbohydrates your blood sugar remains very low, because your body and particularly your brain prefers to run on glucose the body is forced to make it's own, to do this it has to release hormones to assist in gluconeogenesis (the creation of glucose) these hormones are our bodies ''fight or flight'' hormones mainly cortisol and adrenaline. With these hormones circulating the body it can cause people to feel all the lovely feelings that come along with anxiety. Another factor at play is serotonin levels, in people with anxiety and depression it's been shown that they have low levels of serotonin in the brain. Carbohydrates help in the creation of serotonin and depleting them from your diet will also deplete serotonin levels.
