Why might people want to ban pitbulls?

Many people feel Pitbulls should be banned because they were originally breed to fight. Even though they were breed to fight if raised right Pitbulls can make wonderful pets. Pitbulls aren't for everyone, but an experienced owner should be allowed to have one.

there is no reason that they should be. I have one, there is nothing wrong with Staffordshire bull terriers (Pit-bulls) they are a very kind dog! they came from England as a kid's dog!!! they left the kids alone with the dogs a.k.a. they used the dog as a babysitter... they have never killed really anyone! (there have been only 3 or 4 a year) there have been over a million deaths from smokers,fires,gangs, and that's EACH! it is not the dogs it is the owners!!!!!!!!!!! BAN THE DEED NOT THE BREED!!!!!!!!!

In many places of the United States and Canada, pit bulls are legal. However many reigons have adopted a ban. These bans are poor political action in response to a long history involving dog fights, the media, social conciousness, irresponsible ownership and the Pit bull. In 18 century England pit bulls were bred too fight each other, when they came to the U.S. the gained reputations for being loyal family pets. By the 20th century dog fighting became increasingly popular and the pit bull was the primary tool. The reproduction of unstable dogs with a combination of media imaging, gave the pit bull (as a breed) an evil reputation. Legislations have enacted by-laws restricting pit bulls in many areas witch only takes behaved dogs away from good owners, while irresponsible owners and breeders continue to abuse the breed under the law. People are scared, they think that the pit bull is the most dangerous dog. It's not i assure you. It's a great family dog and member of the family. More golden retrievers, yes "air bud" have attacked more then the pit bull.

Because pit bulls have a bad reputation from the media sensationalizing pit bull attacks when in reality most of these dogs are stereotyped as "pit bull type" dogs. Pit bulls have been seen negatively because of dog fighting and the false "lock jaw" accusation. Obviously, a large dog is going to cause more trauma from a dog bite then say a small dog, which is why pit bulls are in the press so much. Pit bulls have been known as great dogs in the past, Petey from Little Rascals, Helen Keller's dog, and are also used as therapy dogs. It does take a dedicated owner to raise any dog, but especially pit bulls because of their large size.

Bans are a waste of money of an ineffective measure that has proven over and over to make matters worse. BSL runs solely on irrational fears, and rarely, if ever, targets the real causes behind dog attacks. If you want to see a drop in dog attacks you need to start regulating who owns a dog, make sentences against dog abuse even stricter, pump up measures against dog fighting, make it illegal to keep a dog chained up outside more then so many hours a day, make it so everyone who wants to breed or sell puppies needs a license, and make it mandatory to have vet visits either yearly or every other year.

You know, actually start caring about the conditions a dog lives in. Doesn't matter what breed to dog is, if they're kept in poor conditions and are rarelysocialized they become a big danger.

You also have to remember that a pitbull isn't the only dog biting people, and is actuall not even the most likely dog to do so. Dachshunds are actually the most human-aggressive dog out there. Pitbulls cover many breeds of dogs, and are commonly mis-representated by media. Have you noticed how many news stories never so much as show a single picture of the "vicious" dog? That's because it's often not really a pit at all, but since it's more sensational to call a dog a pit, and that's what reels in viewers, the news will change the breed to "pit bull". A recentexampleis of a goldenretrieverthat attacked a child and was put in the pound to beeuthanize. Like magic, the breed was changed to "pit bull", and when the owners of the dog called theoriginalnews source out on it, they made up a phony claim how only pits have pink noses.

If you do ban pitbulls, they'll only get replaced with another dog. Banning wont work unless you ban everybreed of dog out there, and enforce it as strictly as you can.

Dog fighting is one thing and the pit bull issue is another issue. Dog fighting is all the owner fault not the dogs.
