A modern nylon rope is more durable and will stand up better to the weather and wear and tear. The old jute or hemp ropes had to be carefully looked after, were prone to mildew, heavy when wet, and easily frayed, increasing the danger of the rope snapping. Also, nylon ropes, being more elastic, will stretch and act like a spring, lessening some of the shock when a climber falls and is suddenly brought to a stop at the end of the rope. Even while trekking in a group, there may be stretches when the path is very narrow and slippery, and while the group is not actually mountaineering, it is safer to rope the group together in case someone slips off the path.
