This is done to prevent the horse from spooking and possibly kicking or running over the handler. If the horse can see and hear you, he most likely will not spook as you approach him. And it's safes to lead from the shoulder as you have more control over the horse.

What is best to catch a horse with no halter?

use a lasso or a cowboy tied rope not too tight that it will hurt the horse. dont approach it from behind or the front (horses are blind in those places) approach by the shoulder so the horse can see you coming and gently toss the rope over the horses neck (not to rapidly or the horse can spook) lead it to the destination.

When you lead a horse around where should you be..?

About even with its throat latch, is how I do it. and the side should not matter, as every horse should be trained to lead from either side. The horse should also be trained to keep his head right in front of your shoulder, keeping you even with his throat latch. He should adjust to your speed and position, not you to his speed and prefered position.

How do you approach and lead a horse safely from a stall corral or field?

You should always stand to the left side of a horse with your hip even with it's shoulder and your right arm close to the lead shank, 'snaking' the rope in front of you and holding it with your left hand. This will ensure that if the horse rears up you will not be in danger of being struck. IF the horse bolts forward it will not run over you and you can always pull it's head around to the left (staying at his/her shoulder) to circle it and calm it down. NEVER lead a horse with it following you!!

Should i Lead a horse by walking in front or beside?

It is rarely a good idea to lead a horse by walking in front of him (sometimes it is necessary if you are walking through a very narrow passageway). Ideally, you should walk by his left (near side) shoulder. That is a much safer position to be in, and it allows you to communicate better with your horse.

How do you walk a horse?

Well, if your horse is trained, you should be able to just squeeze with your lower leg, and your horse should go. If you are referring to walking a horse in hand, then you should stand by the horses should with the lead rope in your hand. Make sure that the lead is NOT wrapped around your hand, because if your horse spooks, it could drag you with it. Move your hand forward, pulling the lead rope forward as well. When the horse begins to walk, lessen the pressure on the lead so that you are barely pushing it forward any more. Making sure that you are keeping pace with your horse. If the horse is well trained, it may not move if you are too far in front of behind the shoulder. Always be careful that you are not standing in front of the horse as well. If you stand directly in front of the horse and it spooks it could very well run you over.

When leading a horse should you walk directly in front of it?

Answer 1: No you should not walk directly in front of your horse. They can accidentally knock you down or step on you. You should walk at their shoulder. It will allow both of you to see where you are going and what rocks or holes and things like that are in front of you. Answer 2: No, when you are leading a horse you always lead on the left. The reason you should lead on the left instead of directly in front is because the horse needs to learn directions. But when you are in tight areas it is perfectly fine to walk directly in front of it, but make sure you are watching the horse while leading in front. It could rear up or bit by something like a fly and go crazy. Answer 3: (Supervisor answer) Horses have 2 blind spots, one of those is directly in front of it's nose, and the other is right behind it's tail. Therefore if you are directly in front of it, the horse cannot see you to know where to go. That means you should stand near the shoulder of the horse, on the left or right side. Many people only lead from the left side as this is tradition, but it is acceptable and considered good training practice to lead he horse from the right also.
