People purchase fair trade chocolate to avoid supporting unfair labor practices that are often used in the Chocolate industry. Essentially, when you buy fair trade chocolate, you are ensuring that the farmers you bought it from aren't exploiting their workers.

Fair trade chocolate is chocolate that is made by people who are paid well for their time and labor, as opposed to slave made chocolate, which is made by slaves, or people who are paid a very small amount for the work they do. What is different between fairtrade and non fair trade chocolate?

When a product is certified as being 'fair trade' it means that those who grew the cocoa beans received a fair price and that those who harvested the beans were paid a fair wage. There is no difference in type and quality of these beans from other beans, and thus there is no difference in the chocolate. However, fair trade chocolate is more expensive because of the higher (fairer) price paid to the growers and workers.
