Basiclly, you shouldn't. Grains are high in starches and sugars, which horses are not well adapted to eat. Grain has been fed to horses because during a long day of work they did not have an opportunity to graze, so to compensate they were given these rich grains to make up for it. Horses no longer have to carry us from coast to coast, and most don't work all day for a living.

Also, most treats given to horses are just bad for them. That includes carrots, apples, molassas, grapes, watermellon (!) or anything with a lot of starch or sugar. Cellery is fine if they like it, or even small amounts of alfalfa pellets work well and give them some extra protein

Feed your horse low starch forages, and be sure they are getting their trace elements and minerals.

What is the safest grain to feed your horse to lose weight?

Well grain will put weight on, not help him lose it. If the horse is overweight then you should slowly cut back on the grain and feed more grass hay instead. If the horse is in moderate to heavy work and needs the grain then choose a manufactured pellet type feed designed for overweight horses.

When should supplements be fed?

Supplements should be fed with the horse's grain. How often the supplement should be mixed with a horse's food depends on the supplement, and the horse. Read the label on the supplement carefully, and talk to your vet to figure out how often you should feed the supplement to your horse, and how much.

What should you feed an horse?

You can feed a horse many things. A horse's main diet should consist of either hay or grass depending on where you live and what climate you have. Horses aren't meant to digest grain but many people feed it to them anyway. So, if you need to feed a horse grain, feed them small amounts of it. Any grain is okay in small amounts! Horses can also enjoy carrots, apples, and processed horse treats you can buy at a local equine store or Tractor Supply. Include, applesauce, molasses and oats in things like a bran mash or homemade treats because horses do enjoy these also. Each horse will have a unique taste and may like/dislike certain things.

Which food or grain is the most healthy for horses?

It all depends on your horses amount of exercise and their current weight. There are all sorts of different grains and types of hay. If your horse is a easy keeper (does not loose weight or gain weight easily, usually stays at the same weight) you should feed him/her plain grass hay with limited grain. If your horse is involved in any sort of competition and is usually working in some way you would be better off feeding him/her alfalfa with grain like Purina Performance Horse feed. If your horse is older you could feed them something like John Lyons or Purina Senior Horse feed. It all just depends on what your horse is like to suite horse horses own personal needs feed wise.

Should you feed a horse grain?

You could, but only a small amount per day. Usually 1 or 2 lbs of grain per day (no more than 2), depending on the size the horse, is sufficient. Any more and they could get colic or founder.
