With the massive build up of men, from 1965 onward, 500,000 men at the peak of the war.
Women did not fight in the Civil War. But, some did dress up like men to help out in the war.
Because they were promised glory when they returned and were told that the war would not last for long. They were also encouraged by the fact that they were told that they would be able to go to different countries to fight proudly wearing smart uniform doing a great favour for their country.
The U.S didn't join the War until 1917 and we only fought for one year. During that time we sent many men to war, I think about 400,000 died. Well, all the men were away fighting, so women had to step up and do their jobs while they were gone. This showed many people that women were equals and that led to their having the right to vote in the 20's.
Because they were stupid!
There was a huge rush of patriotic fervor when the war broke out. It was expected that young men would join up.

honor, duty, responsibility, glory, patriotism, what they believed was right
in simple terms, not enough people were joining the War effort so they needed more people to join. conscription was an easy way to get people to join.
So many men joined up in 1914 because they thought the war would be over by Christmas so they didn't want to miss out on the "fun".
One reason was to collect multiple bounties. Men would join up and collect the enlistment bonus. When they had the opportunity they would desert their unit and go to another state, join a different unit there and collect another enlistment bonus.
0.5 million men signed up to join the armed forces in 1914.
yes many women dressed up as men inthe revolutionary war
Often people would hand out white feathers to the men who were not `brave` enough to join up, or they were pinned on the door of there house. Many of the men also felt an obligation because there friends and family were fighting and frequently dying whilst they stayed at home
