Why shouldn't you place heavy objects on the ledge behind the passenger seat while driving a car?

Any unsecured item in a car has the potential to become a projectile. In an accident where the front of the vehicle impacted an object, there is every chance that a heavy item placed on the ledge behind the passenger's seat would fly forwards like a missile and hit the passenger in the back of the head.
