By the overlap of atomic orbitals. In valence bond theory these atomic orbitals may be s, p or d orbitals or "hybrids" such as sp3.

This is a complex area and the above is a very simple explanation.

Why would you expect a C-C sigma bond formed by sp2-sp2 overlap to be stronger than a sigma bond formed by sp3-sp3 overlap?

because d c-c sigma bond formed by sp2-sp2 is formed from a double bond which is stronger than that of a single bond formed by sp3-sp3.

Which bond is more strong either sigma or pi?

A pi bond is a weaker bond as compare to sigma bond, because pi bond is formed by a minimum overlapping of the orbitals and depends upon length of sigma bond.

Why carbonyl group has only one sigma bond?

Carbonyl group consists of carbon attached to oxygen with double covalent bond in which one bond is formed head on and is the sigma bond(first bond formed in covalency is sigma), followed by lateral overlapping of orbitals to form pi bond with oxygen. The other two valencies of carbon are satisfied by sigma bonds each.

Does Sp3 orbitals have a pi bond?

no, hybrid orbitals cant form pi bonds. they can form only sigma bonds

How do you predict a sigma or pi bond?

there are as many sigma bonds as bonds (of any kind, simple, double or triple). and there is 1 pi bond for each double bond and 2 pi bonds for each triple bond.

What is the bond type for C-Pb?

if C is the carbon of an alkane, then a sigma bond is formed. if C is the carbon of an alkene or alkyne, then a sigma bond form carbon to metal and a pi-back bonding from metal to carbon will exist.

What bond is formed when 2 Oxygen atoms combine to form molecular Oxygen?

Double covalent bond: one sigma- and one pi-bond.

Is a pi bond or a sigma bond weaker?

A pi bond is weaker than a sigma bond.

What is a covalent bond formed when there are two shared pairs of electrons between two atoms?

Such a bond is double covalent bond having one sigma and one pi bond.

How many sigma and pi bond are there in propyne?

There is a double bond between the two carbons, so that is one sigma bond and one pi bond. The hydrogen's all are sigma bonded to the carbons so there are four sigma bonds there. So, there is one pi bond overall and five sigma bonds overall.

The first bond in a covalent molecule is always the sigma bond?

A sigma bond is the bond in which two atoms share the electrons.

Double and triple covalent bonds have?

They have sigma and pi bonds When you have one bond, it's a sigma bond. When you have double bonds, you have 1 sigma and 1 pi bond When you have a triple bond, you have 1 sigma and 2 pi bonds.
