There were a couple of reasons that this happened. One was the way the land was. The southern states had good land for planting large amounts of cash crops, but the northern had rocky soil that couldn't plant crops the same way, so they turned to other means of income. They became the factories, ship yards, and fishing areas of the colonies while the south became the cotton, rice, and indigo producers. When the cotton gin was invented that created a need for more workers, which created the need for more slaves. The two areas of the country developed life styles independent of each other just because of the simple fact of geography at the start.
