Best Answer

Because religion is one way social groups control the behavior of their members, and most social groups recognize that excessive alcohol consumption leads to behavior that is not in the group's best interest.

Until the 1880s Protestant churches didn't prohibit the consumption of alcohol in moderation. Then they cam to view alcohol as evil and drinking as sinful. This created a theological problem because the bible says that Jesus both made and drank alcohol.

This led to the "two wine" doctrine according to which whenever the Bible speaks of wine in a positive way it is referring to grape juice. But whenever it speaks of wine negatively, it is referring to fermented grape juice (wine).

Another Answer:

It depends on the particular group's interpretation of the bible. Almost all groups see drunkeness as a sin. Many groups (Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Reformed Churches, and Jehovah's Witnesses) see alcohol use in moderation as OK. Other groups (Many Baptists, Pentacostals, Methodists, some Evangelicals and Other protestant groups, and the Salvation Army) frown on it. Some groups (Southern Baptist Convention, Seventh-day Adventists, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) prohibit it. For more information, please see the Related Link below.
