South Africa was allowed to compete in the 1960 Games but it was their last Olympics until 1992. The International Olympic Committee banned them for their refusal to comdemn apartheid. The IOC withdrew South Africa's invitation to the 1964 Summer Games during the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria. The IOC said the only way they would be allowed to compete would be to publicly renounce the practice of racial discrimination in the country and to allow competition between whites and blacks.
