Three reasons.

1. The Germans sunk the British cruise liner Lusitania. 128 of the dead were American citizens.

2. The Germans sent a telegram to Mexico to offer aid for an invasion of Texas. The British intercepted it and sent it to the US government.

3. If the Allies lost, they wouldn't be able to pay America back the money they borrowed.
