basically salient pole construction is adapted due to its simplicity in construction.
there are various types of arrangements such as bolted poles, dovetailed, double dovetailed, dovetailed and bolted etc.... but the application is limited due to two main factors:
1. the stresses developed in the fasteners (dovetails, bolts, fixing slots etc) due to high centrifugal forces.
2. high windage noises at high speeds due to large spaces between the poles.
the stresses can be countered upto a certain extent by using certain high tensile forged alloy steel such as 4140, 4340, ASTM grades etc.
but the noise factors require unique design of the poles to avoid windage and electromagnetic noises.

The number of poles is usually 2 or 4 in number. Since these rotors are cylindrical, the windage loss is reduced. The noise produced is also less. These rotors have higher axial length. These rotors do not need damper windings.
Both 2 pole and 4 pole generators are machines which produce electricity. Standard 2 pole versions are cylindrical while 4 pole versions use squirrel cage rotors.

Enigma machines were essentially a system of rotors that were set a certain way every day. All of the German Navy had a schedule for which way to set the rotors, so that all of the machines would come up with the same results. When the keys were pressed, the rotors turned and came out with a different letter for each key press. For instance, if you pressed the letter "E" three times, you might come out with three random letters such as "D", "Z", and "K". Because the machines were set all the same way, they came up with the same random letters. The scrambled message was then sent to the recipient, who did the entire process in reverse to de-code the message. Previous codes had bases in literature or other media and were relatively easy to crack, while Enigma codes were mathematically based and had literally millions if not billions of solutions.

If the rotors are in good condition, not warped, not scratched, then you can replace the pads without turning the rotors. Inspect the rotors carefully.
after changing rotors
A reciprocating engine is different than when using rotors. Rotors are used in a pistonless rotary engine, using one or more rotors and sometimes called rotary pistons.
Tap on the rotors with a hammer, after removing the tire and wheel and the brake assembly. The rotors will come loose. Slide the rotors off and reverse the process.
Remove the wheel, the calipers and the rotors, reverse procedure with new rotors.
