The gfci indicator light is on but appliances connected to the gfci outlet are still powered what is causing this?

The last answer is incorrect. Some GFCI's are designed to light up when working, some are designed to light up when tripped, some are designed to have different color lights depending on normal or tripped conditions. The only way to tell if the receptacle has power is to TEST it. If the GFCI is supposed to be tripped and power is still available, it is either not operating properly or it is not wired properly. If in doubt, have an electrician inspect it for proper operation. Incorrect answer: >>Provided that the GFCI is wired correctly, the indicator light indicates that the receptacles have power. If the light is off there is a ground fault. In other words, the light should always be on.

Can you remove an outlet or hard wired fixture from a circuit for troubleshooting a GFCI I that won't reset?

Shut the GFCI off at the panel breaker. You can remove the down stream load right at the GFCI. Then reapply the power and keeping your fingers clear of the wire terminals, trip the GFCI and reset it. If it stays reset the trouble is down stream from the GFCI. To trouble shoot down stream remove all plugged in devices and try a reset. If still no reset remove the hot wire in the hard wired fixture and try for a reset. If still no reset buy a new GFCI.

How can the light on my GFCI outlet be on when there is no power coming to the outlet?

The pilot light in a GFCI is an indication that the receptacle is hot, maybe they should add a red pilot light to indicate that no power is coming out of the outlet and green when power is available.

Is it safe to use a GFCI outlet that works if the green light stopped working?

If you have any question about the functionality of your GFCI, you should have it replaced. You can certainly verify that the GFCI is still functioning by using the test button, but the light gives added assurance that the circuit is functioning properly.

The GFCI has tripped off that controls my bedroom lights and garage outlets and i cant get it to reset why?

There is three possible reasons for this. First, check to make sure that the breaker also did not trip, a GFCI outlet will not reset if not powered. Second, if the load that caused the GFCI to trip is still plugged in it will not allow the GFCI to reset. So, before trying to reset the GFCI unplug everything that it protects. Third, you might just have a bad GFCI, attempt the above suggestions first and if it still will not reset you will need to replace the GFCI. If after all this the you are still having problems then something more serious is wrong and you need an on site electrician to diagnose the problem.

How do I fix a tripped GFCI outlet?

press the reset

Getting no power from gfci outlet line?

A GFCI outlet has a TEST and RESET switch. Press reset and see if it fixes problem. If reset won't stay in that means that a ground fault condition is present and may be on another outlet that is fed from the tripped GFCI. If this isn't the problem check the main breaker feeding the GFCI and ensure it isn't tripped. If none of this works the GFCI itself may be bad. If you have a Volt Meter you can remove the outlet from the wall receptacle and make sure there is voltage present. You can also see if there is a branch circuit connected. To troubleshoot you can disconnect the branch circuit and then try reset. If you have voltage on input and GFCI won't reset with branch circuits removed, replace the GFCI.

How do you test and reset a GFCI receptacle?

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor) A GFCI receptacle can be tested with the built-in test button, which will cause a small ground fault, tripping a properly working device. GFCI receptacles should be tested monthly. GFCI receptacles can also be tested with a plug-in type GFCI tester. This tester has a GFCI trip button on it which accomplishes the same thing as the built-in test button. Your local inspector will usually test with this method. If your receptacle is tripped, it should reset by pressing in the reset button. If it doesn't, the device is wired incorrectly, has a faulty load plugged into it, or is simply in need of replacement. ---- IF YOU'RE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.If you do this work yourself, always turn off the powerat the breaker box/fuse panel BEFORE you attempt to do any work AND always use a meter or voltage indicator to insure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

How do you reset a GFI?

To reset a GFCI you need to first correct any ground faults in the circuit - or some other other fault in the equipment and/or its flexible cord and/or its plug - being protected by the GFCI, which is causing an imbalance in the currents flowing in the hot and neutral wires. Ground faults are usually caused by wet electrical equipment. Then you need to press the RESET button on the GFCI.

Is a ground fault indicator outlet installed at the breaker box?

There are tow places to put a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. There is a GFCI breaker which would be installed in a breaker box and a GFCI outlet that can be installed anywhere. Most GFCI outlets allow you to connect regular outlets to the GFCI and those outlets will also be protected.

What does the red light on the gfci outlet mean?

It means the breaker has been tripped. There are two possible ways to reset it - some have a button on the outlet (there may be several outlets on one circuit, so you may have to look around) the other is the main breaker in your breaker box. You'll need to find a reset the breaker.

Is a GFCI breaker required for an electric pool heater?

I'm not positive but, as far as I know, one is required on a 120V heater but not on a 220V heater. Even if a GFCI isn't required I would install one anyway for the safety of your family and friends. These devices do work and are well worth the cost. Call a Professional... Either a GFCI outlet or a GFCI breaker, and I think I'd use the GFCI outlet because the reset on an outlet is closer to the pool than the breaker would be. But put it far enough away from the pool that you've got to get out to reset it. I think that's code; if it's not it should be.
