At the moment the southern cross is an indication of Australian pride, with many choosing to tattoo themselves and attatch southern cross stickers to vehicles. I have a southern cross tattoo as I am about to serve in the military and feel a stong sence of national pride. The soutrhern cross can mean different things to different people. Cheers

The Southern Cross stars also known as the 'Crux' is not just special for Australia and New Zealand, but also special to most if not all countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

You can find the Southern Cross stars on the flags of countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Brazil.

A number of government, provincial and company flags in the sothern hemisphere can also be found sporting the Southern cross. The Argentinian province of Tierra del Fuego has a very prominant Southern Cross on their flag for example.

As the Southern Cross is visible mostly only in the southern hemisphere, it has therefore become a symbol of the southern location of its users.

The Southern Cross stars where also at one time very important to early sailor in the southern hemisphere for navigation and is most likely one of the main reasons it became so important to people in the southern hemisphere.

Why is the New Zealand flag similar to Australia's flag?

Quite simple (1) The NZ flag does not have the "Commonwealth Star" which is an integral part of the Australian flag (this is the six pointed star to represent the six founding states plus Australia's territories, located under the Union Jack) (2) The NZ flag has the Southern Cross coloured red with white borders(rather than white on the Aussie flag) (3) The Southern Cross on the NZ flag only has four five-pointed stars (rather than five on the Aussie - four with seven points and one with five) (Typo on original answer incorrectly said the stars on the Aussie flag were blue - they are of course white
