Their blooming coincides with the start of a new school year and corporate turnover, so spring is a new beginning. It's a time to celebrate beauty and change. There are groves and groves of bushy light pink trees, and it's lovely to sit under them and drink and talk and just enjoy the sight.

This occurs over several weeks usually between mid-March to the beginning of May in mainland Japan and North America depending upon the local climate. For example, the 2012 International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia will be held between March 16-25, while most of the trees in Vancover, Canada bloom from mid-April and early May.

∙ 12y agoIn terms of 'hanami,' (flower viewing), activities include picnicking in parks near the cherry trees. During cherry blossom season, it is typical for Japanese people to lay out blue tarps near the trees, and eat and drink sake with friends.
Some areas have their own 'matsuri,' (festivals) which usually include dancing, special "floats," food vendors, games, as well as the normal activities of 'hanami.'
