Because the steam expands as it passes through the turbine. The steam velocity through the turbine is constant from steam chest to exhaust hood (though it changes in each stage). Thus, the space needed for the steam to expand needs to be expanded to correspond with that expansion of the steam.

Why vacuum is created in condenser on steam turbine?

Firstly, vacuum is being created in turbine exhaust and condenser rather than being required. It is created to reduce the back-pressures and to improve the turbine efficiency. Also, with vacuum the designers can design large size last stage blades of LP turbine for maximizing the turbine output.

What is the necessary of compounding in turbines?

compounding of turbines is necessary to make the turbines practically controllable. If compounding is not done the size of the turbine will be huge.Hence by pressure &velocity compounding the turbine becomes small in size &its velocity is also becomes controllable.

What is the length of an blade for a gas turbine?

The length of a blade depends on the style (impulse or reaction), the overall size of the turbine, whether it is an axial flow or radial flow turbine, and where the blade is located within turbine of an axial flow turbine. One thing that is constant: the length of the blade increases from the steam or gas inlet to the discharge of the unit. The profile will gradually increase in diameter from inlet to discharge.

What is the maximum plant load factor a gas turbine gives when operating in open cycle?

Depends on what type of gas, plant size and cycle and carriage.

Steam turbine turning gear?

Steam Turbine Turning Gear - Turning gear is utilized on turbines to reduce eccentricity or out of round of the rotor. When a rotor is standing still it has a tendency to sag due to its weight. While running a turning gear which is a separate motor that turns the rotor slowly 10-50 RPM through a clutching mechanism. This rotation keeps the rotor in balnace. It is very important to run the turning gear on shutdowns and start ups. The time required to run is dependent on the size of your unit. Typically the turning gear must be on for 12-36 hours for small to large steam turbins after shutdown and 2-16 hours prior to a turbine start. If a turning gear is not utilized the rotor will become eccentric and may cause vibration up to wiping rotating parts with the stationary parts causing catastrophic failure. Steamengineer @ Gmail

How many feet wide is a wind turbine?

Wind turbine vary enormously in size from a small turbine on a boat with blades about two feet in diameter to large industrial 'wind farms' the blades of which are individually dozens of feet long

What is a steam turbine diaphragm?

Steam turbine is comprising of stages, number and size of the stages depands upon the break horse power of the turbine. The stage has set of moving and fixed blades. The moving blades are attached to the rotor while the stationary blades is called Diaphragm. The diaphragm guides the steam to glide over the moving blades for producing rotary motion.

How many blades should i put on my model wind turbine?

The number of blades in wind turbine is not determined by aesthetics but by science. The size, shape, solidarity, and positioning is determined by the weather conditions and power output. Current tubbiness include turbines using vortexes (no blades) and high solidarity turbines (12 blades) once popular on farms to pump water. If the model is a replica of actual turbine the number of blades in the model will be the same as the number in the actual unit.

What is the theory behind generating electricity through hydroelectric power?

The main theory is that in a closed system, water at a high physical level runs downhill to a lower physical level. This water flow through the generators turbine blades induce the turbine to turn. Control of the water flow through the blades controls the speed of the turbine generator. The head pressure and volume of the water govern the size of the generator that is connected to the turbine.

How does wind power generate electricity?

Wind energy (Kinetic) is transformed into electrical energy (Potential) with the use of a turbine-generator. The wind turns the blades of a wind turbine. These blades then turn a generator, something which uses magnets (specifically magnetic flux) to create electrical energy. As electrical energy is a form of Potential energy, the energy has been converted from Kinetic energy (the turning of the blades) into Potential energy (also known as "voltage") by the generator.More detailsA generator is a coil of wire surrounded by magnets. When the coil spins or the magnets spin, electricity is created. You need something to cause it to spin. In your car the gas engine does. At a hydro-electric dam, falling water that drives the turbines' blades. At a coal-fired power plant, expanding steam drives the turbines which in turn drive the generators. And in a wind generator, the wind turning the propeller blades drive the generator.A wind generator makes electricity just like any generator: the fan blades drive a turbine which turns the generator. The amount of power (wattage) produced depends on several things including the speed of the wind, the size of the propeller blades and the size of the generator. It is the same process, just a different power source.A wind turbine - as any turbine, is an energy converter. It converts wind energy into mechanical energy and then electrical energy. Some so-called direct-drive turbines use magnets to keep it running even when there's no wind. Now direct-drive turbines are used. The number of blades do not matter (too many blades = too much turbulence), The span of the blades make more power. That's the smarter way to make more power. In 1985 blades had a span of 30 ft. Now they get to over 200 ft.
