By having a large power plant that serves a large area the electric can be produced cheaper than several small plants because of the economy of scale.

High voltage electric transmission lines lose less energy than low voltage lines over the same distance. This allows a power plant to be a great distance away from the distribution station. At the distribution station, the high voltage can be stepped down using Transformers. The power from the distribution station can be stepped down again at the pole transformer to provide power to the consumer.

Alternating current can be easily converted to lower voltage by using transformers. Direct current cannot be (economically) stepped down by a transformer.

Most electronic appliances use DC because they use semiconductor chips and transistors which only work on DC. Any electronic appliance like a TV or computer which appears to run on AC converts it to DC internally. There are a few semiconductor devices such as SCRs or TRIACS which will switch AC current, but the control circuitry uses DC.

In a computer, a chip may represent a binary 1 by +3 volts and a binary 0 by +0.5V. If the chip ran on AC which changes polarity many times a second, the answers would not make sense and the transistor would be damaged by negative voltage.
