After the death of Sulla, Rome was left with a power vacuum. Powerful men jockeyed for position especially men such as Pompey and Crassus. The senate had seen a lot of its power eradicated or at least weakened by the Dictatorship of Sulla and so with the Empire ripe for the taking, it only required the correct candidate to step forward. The problem was that many grievances were still unresolved from the times of Sulla and so it would take a man with intelligence, wealth and power to even contemplate such a move.
