Seward was the individual primarily responsible for bringing the Alaskan Territory into the United States. At the time, Alaska was seen as a useless frozen wasteland devoid of any useful resources. Therefore, spending US money and resources on acquiring a money-draining chunk of land was not readily accepted by the citizens of the United States.
However, after gold was discovered in Alaska, the territory suddenly became a good place to have - there were valuable resources that could bring more wealth to the country.
