Augustus based his political career on his being the adoptive son of Julius Caesar, who had been very popular. This ensured his popularity. He even changed his name to Gaius Julius Caesar

Divi Filius (son of the divine Gaius Julius Caesar). When he became the sole ruler of Rome, he continued Julius Caesar's claim that his family descended form the goddess Venus. He also claimed that he wanted to restore the Roman Republic, which had been shattered by the civil wars, of which he was the final winner, while, in actual fact, he was doing away with it and replacing it with his personal rule. To do so he presented himself as the restored of old and decayed roman values, virtues and fortitude. He revived archaic religious rites which had fallen into disuse, launched a campaign on public morality, which included making adultery illegal, and one on reviving Roman probity. When be became the first Roman Emperor he presented himself as the restorer of peace and the bringer of the prosperity which this would bring. This was exemplified in the Ara Pacis (altar of peace), whose art reproduced these themes.

Octavian Augustus or Augustus Caesar, whichever name you want to call him, was important for various reasons among them the rebuilding of the city of Rome, the refurbishing of the city's infrastructure (sewers, fountains, etc) the consolidation of the army as a national army rather than an individual general's army, the addition of Egypt to the empire, the Pax Romana. However perhaps the most important of his achievements was the transition of government from a republican state to the principate.
