He also ruled in the background, adopting powers, not office - powers of a tribune of the plebs (veto, introducing legislation in the senate), powers of pro-consul (authority outside Rome), control of the border provinces (therefore of the armies, as they were stationed there). He avoided any suggestion of Dictatorship/kingship/emperorship, which had brought out the knives on Julius Caesar (who had declared himself dictator for life, and so invited the ending of his life), nominating himself as Princeps (First Citizen) and inventing the title Augustus (High One).
